The M1-8SFP module is a media module for the Hirschmann MACH102 rack mount switches. This media module has been designed by Hirschmann and Belden to act as an interface device for the Hirschmann MACH102 switches by providing 8 additional Ethernet communication ports to the switches. In some applications, more than 1 media module like the M1-8SFP module can be installed on a MACH102 switch at a time. All 8 of the ports on the M1-8SFP media module are SFP 100 BASE-X Ethernet slots. These ports are fiber ports that can all use single-mode and multi-mode fiber cables for connections. The exact length that the cables need to be depends on the type of connections they are used for and whether they are single-mode or multi-mode fiber cables, but the manufacturer recommends that the cables always be as short as possible to promote efficient and reliable communication.

The Hirschmann M1-8SFP media module is meant to be used with managed MACH102 rack mount switches. Managed switches need to be configured and managed directly by the operators in order to function properly, whereas unmanaged switches can be activated and used in most applications without being configured first. The power consumption rating of the M1-8SFP media module is 11 Watts when it works with an SFP module, and its power output rating is 37 BTU per hour in the form of heat. Its protection class is IP 20 and its mean time before failure or MTBF rating is approximately 109 years when it is used in a clean environment with an average ambient temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The M1-8SFP media module can operate at temperatures between 0 and 50 degrees Celsius.
